When I came to, I was back in the carriage, lying on my side on the bench. Groaning, I tried to lift my hands to my throbbing temple, but they were tied behind my back, the rope so tight that my hands had gone numb while I was out. Panic spiked in my blood, and my eyes flew open to find Trolbos sitting across from me. An ugly grin spread across his thuggish face as he saw I was awake.
âFinally come back to us now, have you, bitch?â he sneered. âI knew you couldnât be trusted. It was only a matter of time before you showed your true colors.â
âEnough, Trolbos,â Salcombe said, his voice like ice. âI am not pleased with you, either. Zaraâs escape attempt might have been successful if I hadnât stopped her at the door.â The implication that Trolbos was at fault was crystal clear.
Trolbos set his jaw, his eyes blazing with hatred. âIâm sorry, sir. It wonât happen again.â
âNo, it wonât,â Salcombe said softly. Heâd never once turned to look at us, his eyes trained on the landscape. Night had fallen, and though the sky was still cloudy, it was clear enough to allow the moon to illuminate the fields rolling past us. Opening my senses, I immediately knew that we were nearing the estate. The heartâs distinctive gong sounded in my head, tugging at my soul. The treasure hunter in me wanted to find it, wanted to dig it up and finally hold it in my hands. Despite coming within spitting distance of two different pieces, Iâd never actually seen one in the flesh.
But the heart wasnât the only thing close by, I realized. Lessie was near tooâonly a few miles away. âZara,â she said urgently. âAre you all right? Iâve been trying to reach you!â
âSalcombe drugged me. I just woke up,â I said, my mental voice groggy. Whatever sleeping serum heâd injected in me had packed quite the punchâpart of me wanted to close my eyes again and drift into that deep, dark sleep. âWeâre very close to a piece of the dragon godâs heart, Lessie.â I sent her a mental image of the estate.
âIâll meet you there,â Lessie said. âWeâll take out Salcombe and his lackeys before they dig up the heart.â
Hope surged in my chest, but I didnât allow myself to be lulled into a false sense of securityâthere were all kinds of things that could go wrong. âThis is foolish,â I said to Salcombe, trying to appeal to his sense of reason. âWeâre breaking into an occupied estate. How are you going to get in, dig up the heart, and get out without being spotted? You canât hope to drug everyone into a stupor like you did when we broke into that townhouse in Zallabar.â
âStop asking questions,â Salcombe ordered. âYour only concern is to locate the heart. You are not in charge of the logistics.â
âNo, but Iâll still be hanged if weâre caught.â
âAnd youâll be killed if you continue to refuse to cooperate.
